WASHINGTON (AP) — A Chinese student who became a vocal advocate for Tibet while living in Europe has been detained by Chinese authorities, according to two of her close friends, as Beijing is becoming more aggressive in its efforts to silence dissenting voices not only at home but also abroad.

On July 30, 2025, Zhang Yadi disappeared when she was in Shangri-la (Gyalthang) city, Diqing (Dechen) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan province. Sources indicated that state security personnel had returned her to her hometown in Changsha municipality, Hunan province, and detained her on suspicion of “inciting separatism.”
